The best carpet for your home depends on several factors and, while carpet stores have hundreds of different styles, designs, and patterns all from various mills, not all of them will meet your requirements. Ask yourself questions about the size of your family--do you have kids or pets? What is your home's style? What is your budget, not just for initial product purchase, but any extras such as periodic cleaning?

Understanding carpet fiber

There are natural fibers, synthetics (including acrylics), and blends.  Many of our customers ask if naturals are better than synthetics,  but it’s a personal preference and how much you value specific characteristics.  Synthetics tend to be more stain-resistant, while natural fibers are harvested from nature.

There are five standard fibers, including natural wool, fluffy, soft, and inherently stain-resistant.  It’s also a bit pricey, but manufacturers blend it with acrylics to bring down the price. Nylon is the most well-known synthetic, known for ultra-strength.  It is also soft, resistant to stains, and has good resilience, meaning it has a "bounce back" quality.

Polyester, a hydrophobic, does not absorb and has superior inherent resistance to stains.  Olefin is budget-friendly, stain-resistant, and often associated with the Berber (looped) style.  Triexta has permanent stain resistance built right into the fiber and is also ultra-strong, having been developed by DuPont, the same people who created nylon.

Choosing carpet pile

Carpet pile has a significant impact on style, texture, and functionality. High pile, like the shag, has long loose fibers, while low pile rugs have short, tightly woven yarns. These are easier to keep clean and are a bit more durable. There’s also a moderate pile, like Straight or Textured Saxony.
